Position Summary
Searching for a fun and active summer job? Look no further than the IU Natatorium’s Summer Day Camp! From June 9th to August 1st participate in a fun and interactive summer camp environment as a counselor for children ages 5-12. Counselors will be responsible for executing camp programming in a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment.
Specific Responsibilities
- Always serve as a role model to campers - Model proper behavior and attitude
- Assure campers are always under proper supervision
- Maintain and ensure high standards of health and safety are practices in all activities for campers and staff
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth
- Ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance of equipment and facilities is adhered to; report needed repairs properly to a supervisor
- Plan events and program lesson plans to ensure the learning and positive experience by campers
- Assist in completing all forms and reports so that all incidents and actions are properly documented whenever necessary
- Maintain cleanliness in all program areas
- Adherence to all policies and procedures of IU Indianapolis and the IU Indianapolis Sport Complex
- Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment
- Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/trainings
- Other related duties as assigned
Required Skills/Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Must be able to meet the Indiana University background check standards for the Programs Involving Children (PIC) policy
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
- Must be able to complete the Safety & Health CPR & First Aid training provided by the Natatorium staff
- Must be able to communicate effectively with children, parents, fellow counselors, camp supervisors, Camp & Event coordinator, and other full-time staff
- Must be able to endure daily exposure to outdoor conditions including sun, heat, humidity, rain, cold, etc.
- Must be able to endure prolonged standing, along with some bending, stopping, and walking long distances
- Must have hand eye coordination and manual dexterity required to manipulate equipment and camper activities
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Position Summary
Responsible for everyday operational tasks at the IU Natatorium, including, but not limited to: monitoring swimmers, participant safety, and maintaining skills.
Specific Responsibilities
- Aquatic Risk Management: Lifeguarding; scanning assigned zones of protection, patron rule enforcement, proper time management of rotations and providing safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions and first aid when necessary according to the IU Natatorium and Jeff Ellis and Associates Risk Management protocol. Immediately reports any hazardous conditions to supervisor including inability to properly scan zone due to water clarity or other conditions. Will maintain minimum number of in-service hours required by the department.
- Aquatic Facility Maintenance and Operations: Will assist with cleaning and disinfecting around pool deck, locker rooms, and lifeguard office. May assist with answering phones, communication with meet hosts, employees, and customer service. Will assist with meet set-up and tear-down; involving lifting and/or other labor intensive duties.
- Documentation: May assist with water testing, accident reports, and other operational reports and records.
- Policy and Procedure: Follows all policies and procedures as described in the Indiana University employee manual and all other IU Natatorium protocols, policies and guidelines including those outlined by Ellis and Associates Risk Management standards and other affiliated organizational values and protocols.
- Emotional maturity, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must be able to meet the Indiana University background check standards for the Programs Involving Children (PIC) policy.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
- Must be able to swim 200 yards continuously; tread water for 2 minutes without using hands; retrieve 10lb diving brick from 18ft of water.
- Must be able to complete the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program provided at the IU Natatorium.
- Must be available to work some weekend shifts every month.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
- Previous lifeguard and/or competitive swimming experience preferred

Position Summary
Provide high quality swim instruction to participants of varying ages (toddlers – adults) following the SwimAmerica curriculum. Instructor will ensure the safety of students while teaching proper swim techniques and basic water safety in a fun, energetic atmosphere.
Specific Responsibilities
- Ability to observe and demonstrate proper stroke technique.
- Must enjoy working with children.
- Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm.
- Ensure the safety of all participants. Understand and follow all established protocol and policies.
- Ability to communicate effectively with participants, fellow instructors, learn-to-swim supervisors, Program Director, and other full-time staff.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child up to 50 lbs.
- Provide high quality swim instruction to participants of varying ages (toddlers – adults).
- Plan and prepare for all swim lessons with the goals and abilities of the students in mind and communicate effectively with participants.
- Educate participants on proper technique and promote swimmer safety.
- Begin and end class on time, remain after class to answer participant and/or parent questions as needed, and clean up supplies.
- Provide constant feedback to participants to facilitate improvement while recording and maintaining attendance records.
- Utilize all necessary equipment as related to the program in the proper manner.
- Attend mandatory meetings and coach development in-services as scheduled.
- Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintain a high standard of customer service.
- Be responsible and fulfill your commitments to scheduled shifts. Notify a supervisor personally, and in a timely manner if you are unable to meet your commitment, and you cannot find a substitute coach. This includes illness and extenuating circumstances.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
